Tony Romo's run as CBS Sports' lead NFL analyst is over. The network said Friday that the two sides have "mutually agreed to part ways," ending a nine-year partnership that had been on hold since his arrest in July.
J.J. Watt, who moved into the top booth when Romo was placed on leave before the season, will stay there.
The arrest
Romo, 46, was pulled over in Milwaukee on July 23. According to court records, an officer said he smelled a "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage," and Romo did poorly on field sobriety tests before he was taken into custody and released.
He pleaded no contest on Sept. 1. His driving privileges were revoked for six months, and he was ordered to install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he owns or drives, complete an alcohol assessment program and pay a $784 fine.
'Something I've never done before'
Romo said he plans to step back for a while before deciding what's next.
I'm going to use this time to take a break, something I've never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity.
He went straight from the field to the booth. Romo played his entire career with the Cowboys, from 2004 to 2016, and made four Pro Bowls before moving into the CBS booth.
CBS thanked him for his contributions and wished him well. Watt now has the lead job for the rest of the season.
