Aleksander Barkov played one full game this season. In his second, his left knee gave way along the boards in San Jose, and he went straight down the tunnel, throwing his glove to the ground on the way.
The Panthers captain was tangled up with Sharks defenseman Darnell Nurse and forward Zack Ostapchuk in the second period when the knee buckled. He didn't come back, and Florida lost 4-3 in overtime.
Coach Paul Maurice wouldn't say what the injury was. He did make a point of separating it from the last one. "It's not related to his injury last year at all," Maurice said. "We'll have a good idea by [Friday] afternoon."
That injury was a torn right ACL and MCL in training camp, and it cost the 31-year-old Finn the entire season. This one is on the other leg. Florida will hope that means a shorter answer.
Cagnoni ends it
San Jose led 3-0 on a Mason Marchment goal and two from Will Smith in the second period, one short-handed and one on the power play, both set up by Macklin Celebrini. Smith and Celebrini finished with three points each.

Luca Cagnoni's overtime shot went in off Akira Schmid.
Florida came back anyway. Eetu Luostarinen scored twice, and he and Matthew Tkachuk scored 17 seconds apart in the third, with Tkachuk tying it at 5:18. Then at 3:14 of overtime, Luca Cagnoni's shot hit goalie Akira Schmid and went in.
Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves for the Sharks, and Schmid stopped 28. There were scuffles all night, and Tkachuk and Jacob Trouba fought at center ice.
The Sharks host Los Angeles on Saturday. Florida plays at Anaheim on Sunday, and by then it should know how long it will be without its captain.
