St. Louis City SC hasn't lost an MLS game in 17 tries. After a 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night, it is second in the Western Conference at 13-6-8.
This was supposed to be a tough one. New York had allowed two goals in its previous four games, with Ethan Horvath posting three shutouts, and had won two straight. St. Louis needed five minutes to break through. Conrad Wallem headed the ball across goal and Rafael Navarro redirected it in.
It stayed 1-0 for a long time. Then in the 87th minute Simon Becher pounced on a Red Bulls turnover deep in their own half to make it 2-0, and Tomas Ostrak knocked in a rebound in stoppage time.
At the other end, Roman Bürki made four saves for his third clean sheet of the season.
Missing pieces for New York
The Red Bulls (9-12-6) were without two of their best young players, Adri Mehmeti and Julian Hall, who were away with the U.S. national team. It showed in the attack, which didn't trouble Bürki much.
It was the first regular-season meeting between the two clubs.
What's next
Both teams get a break for the international window. The Red Bulls host San Diego FC on Oct. 10, and St. Louis puts its streak on the line at home against the LA Galaxy on Oct. 11.
