Tennis players almost never get to be on a team. Coco Gauff is about to be on one she partly owns.
The two-time Grand Slam champion is a player-owner of the Florida Flamingos Racquet Club, one of three teams in the revived World Team Tennis. She's set to play the Flamingos' home matches on Dec. 14 and 15 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, where the NHL's Panthers play, not far from Delray Beach, where she grew up. She said she's looking forward to playing in front of family and friends, and to the team experience.
The Flamingos go back to the beginning. They were one of the original franchises when Billie Jean King and others started the mixed-gender league in 1974. This version of the roster has Tommy Paul, Learner Tien, Iva Jovic, Brandon Nakashima and Eva Lys.
New York's Empire Racquet Club has US Open semifinalists Frances Tiafoe and Jessica Pegula. Toronto's team is all Canadian: Denis Shapovalov, Leylah Fernandez, Victoria Mboko and Gabriel Diallo. Each match is four singles sets, men's and women's No. 1s and No. 2s, plus a mixed doubles super tiebreaker.
