A 6 1/2-Game Lead on Sept. 1. One Game Left. The Phillies Need Zack Wheeler

Some Phillies fans wore paper bags over their heads on Saturday night. By the sixth inning most of them had left, and it was hard to blame them.

Tampa Bay beat Philadelphia 12-1. That's four losses in a row and a 9-14 September for a team that led Arizona by 6 1/2 games for the last National League wild card on Sept. 1. Now it comes down to the final day.

Where it stands

The Phillies are one game ahead of the Diamondbacks, who lost 10-7 in San Diego on Saturday. But Arizona holds the tiebreaker, so Philadelphia needs to win Sunday or have the Diamondbacks lose. Anything else and the season ends, completing the franchise's worst collapse since 1964.

How Saturday went wrong

Aaron Nola started on two days' rest and was hit hard from the start. Junior Caminero hit a two-run homer, his 42nd, and Richie Palacios doubled in another for 3-0. Nola was done after one inning. Six relievers followed. José Alvarado was loudly booed after giving up three runs in the fifth, and José Urquidy allowed three more in the sixth to make it 10-0. Palacios finished with four RBIs and Victor Mesa Jr. had four hits. The Phillies' only run was unearned, in the seventh, ending a 21-inning scoreless stretch.

There was a scary moment for the Rays: Trea Turner lined a 104-mph ball off starter Griffin Jax's lower back in the third, and Jax left the game.

Sunday's games

Zack Wheeler starts for Philadelphia against the Rays' Nick Martinez at Citizens Bank Park at 2:30 p.m. ET, on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Arizona plays at San Diego at 3:10 p.m. ET, with Michael Soroka against Randy Vasquez. The Phillies are chasing a fifth straight playoff trip. Live scores are on the TVRivo scores page.
