The Yankees spent the pregame honoring CC Sabathia, retiring his No. 52 and unveiling his plaque in Monument Park. Then Pete Alonso spent the afternoon hitting balls into their bleachers.
The first came in the third inning, on the first pitch he saw from rookie Brendan Beck. The second, in the sixth, landed at least halfway up the left-field bleachers, 471 feet away, the fourth-longest home run in the majors this year. Baltimore won the first game of the doubleheader 10-2.
Alonso came in tied with three other players for the AL lead. He left with 43, alone at the top, plus 113 RBIs, tied with St. Louis' Alec Burleson for the most in baseball and the most by an Oriole since Chris Davis' 117 in 2015. His third-inning homer was his seventh straight hit to leave the park, something no Oriole had done since Mark Trumbo in 2016.
He had help. Dylan Beavers hit his first career grand slam in the fourth, and in the sixth Jeremiah Jackson got an inside-the-park home run when his fly ball sailed over center fielder Spencer Jones and bounced away at the warning track. Trevor Rogers and Albert Suárez covered eight innings between them.
For New York, Anthony Volpe made his first start at third base. Beck gave up seven runs in five innings and took the loss.
