Gabriel Moreno Sat Out the Final Day and Won the Batting Title by a Point

Gabriel Moreno didn't play on the last day of the season. A tender hamstring kept him out of Arizona's lineup, and he finished at .311. That was enough: Philadelphia's Luis Arraez, a three-time batting champion, ended at .310 after spraining his ankle Thursday and missing the Phillies' final series.

Moreno is the Diamondbacks' first batting champion and only the fifth player with at least 50 starts at catcher to win one. The others are Bubbles Hargrave, Ernie Lombardi, Joe Mauer and Buster Posey.

In the American League, Houston's Yordan Alvarez won his first batting title at .316. That's the lowest average ever for the overall major league leader, below Dick Groat's .325 in 1960, and a good summary of how hard hitting has gotten. Only seven qualified hitters reached .300.

Misiorowski's triple

Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski led the majors in ERA (1.80), strikeouts (252) and opponents' average (.157). Since 1950, only Sandy Koufax, J.R. Richard and Mike Scott had done all three. The .157 was the lowest opponents' average since 1900 for a pitcher with 100 innings, better than Pedro Martinez's .167 in 2000. Cam Schlittler of the Yankees won the AL ERA title at 1.95.

The other leaders

Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Schwarber tied for the major league lead with 45 homers. Pete Alonso led the AL with 43 and with 113 RBIs, making him the first player to win an RBI title in both leagues, and St. Louis' Alec Burleson led the NL with 116.

Corbin Carroll led his league in triples for a fourth straight year, a first. Washington's Nasim Nuñez stole 49 bases. Cristopher Sánchez and Sonny Gray tied for the lead with 18 wins, so there's no 20-game winner again, and Colson Montgomery set a new record with 227 strikeouts.

Alvarez still has a postseason to play. The Astros open against the White Sox on Tuesday.
