Eury Pérez Had Never Beaten Atlanta. Then He Threw a One-Hitter
In his 68th career start, the 23-year-old threw his first complete game, one of only 11 shutouts in baseball this year.

Going into Friday, Eury Pérez's career numbers against the Braves were ugly: six starts, no wins, three losses and a 9.76 ERA. He finished the night with a one-hit shutout.
The only hit was Sean Murphy's single on the first pitch of the sixth inning. Other than that, Pérez struck out eight, walked one, and got through nine innings on 105 pitches. It was the first complete game of his career, in his 68th start. Miami won 3-0 and ended a six-game losing streak to the NL East champions.
Shutouts like that barely exist anymore. It was only the 11th complete-game shutout in the majors this season, one fewer than all of last year, and the only seasons with fewer were 1871 through 1873. Complete games of any kind are rare too: this was the 21st, after 28 in 2024 and 29 last year.
Miami didn't give him much to work with until late. Joe Mack homered off Grant Holmes in the seventh, and in the eighth Heriberto Hernández singled in a run and Griffin Conine homered.
The Marlins are 79-81, level with last season's win total and still trying to avoid a third straight losing year. Before the game they held a moment of silence for José Fernández, who died 10 years ago in a boating accident.
