Corbin Burnes waited 15 months to pitch again after Tommy John surgery. He lasted three starts.
The Diamondbacks put him on the 15-day injured list Friday with shoulder inflammation, a day before he was supposed to start. He'd come back on Sept. 8 and it hadn't gone well: 10 1/3 innings, a 7.84 ERA, eight strikeouts and four walks, no decisions.
Arizona called up right-hander Jose Cabrera from Triple-A Reno and said it would figure out Saturday's plan based on how Friday went. The stakes were clear. The Cubs and Padres already had wild cards, and after Philadelphia lost 2-0 to Tampa Bay, the Diamondbacks started the night a game and a half back for the last spot with an elimination number of two.
Friday went well. Nolan Arenado, Lars Nootbaar and Jordan Lawlar homered early for a 6-2 lead in San Diego, and Arizona won 11-4 to stay alive.
